Useful downloads for 2-1

FLUID MECHANICS - LANDAU, LIFSCHITZ.pdf
These books are available for downloading by courtesy of  Chemical Engineering Ebooks .

ESP

Please visit the Experiment Safety Plan doc. on the net which is to ensure safety for all the students who work in the laboratories. This particular link what I've provided illustrates the plan by the Chemical Engineering Department of New Mexico State University. Through this plan, even other students all over the world can be benefited. And it should be obligatory for all those who perform experiments, and should be carried out in all the educational institutions. Obviously, they might take some appropriate measures to avoid any hazards while doing experiments, but students may be negligible in taking precautions. So, when the year starts, or each time when they go for lab, safety rules should be explained by the concerned person. Although, they may be boring as we are already aware of them, but if we don't give a damn, then we could suffer!

Momentum Transfer Lab

Lab internals are over. I got verification of Bernoulli's theorem and completed it smoothly. The delicacy of the whole experiment was in the calculation part. And then, two graphs have been plotted. Details of this experiment are here...

 The other six experiments in the syllabus for this semester are-
Centrifugal Pump Test
Reynolds number in pipe flows
V-Notch
Losses in pipe friction
Verification of Stoke's Law
Venturimeter

Interesting Links-
1.Here is the Wikipedia site covering all the scientific phenomena that were named after people.

Next World: Intelligence

After watching this broadcast in Discovery, I felt amazed. It was all about the emerging new technologies. It has been said that robots could change our lifestyle by 2050. They could be used in cars, bikes, buses and even house hold items.

Many technologies have been innovated till now like the brain computer interface, radar systems etc and many others are on the way. And I found claytronics as very fascinating in the whole programme. There was  also some discussion about cybercars which possess automatic controlling and are computerized. They detect objects on the road and drive us safely to the our destination. So, I decided to have one:)

Mudras

Mudras are positions of the body that have some kind of influence on the energies of the body, or your mood. Mostly the hands and fingers are held in some position, but the whole body may be part of the mudra as well.

 While I was reading Vedic Insights blog, I encountered them which are used in many Hindu dance forms and also in Meditation. It is said that every mudra has a  specific purpose and that they improvise our health.
For instance, join the middle finger and the ring finger with the tip of the thumb; the forefinger and the little finger should be held upright.It is called as Apan Mudra and it may help in reducing constipation and urinary problems. Isn't it amazing!

Science Online 2010 Conference

Look who's coming.I'd traced this information through my favorite blog.

And, here is the Youtube Science Channel(as I found interesting) of a participant who will be attending the fourth annual science communication conference.

There are about 225 Registrants.And you know what, I'm unlucky for not attending the conference which is thousands of kilometers away from my home(as it is foreign for me).

But, I'm anyway in the Member list.

The Dose makes the Poison

The videos below encapsulate some topics pertaining to environmental hazards, human health etc. I'd noticed them on  Atomic Insights blog and thought of sharing the same here. They show the impact of radioactive materials on our lives. And impacts on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were illustrated. It's also pretty much concerned with  hormesis!.

Chemical toxins are a real health risk.So is radiation.

It's Diwali!

The most enjoyable festival for all the children and elders was celebrated yesterday with excitement and glory. This festival has evolved from the mythological stories of the Hindu religion. Even, I enjoy it every year. General way of celebrating it includes performing prayers to  Hindu gods and goddesses, and then burning crackers. Every place in India brightens with sparkles all over , and it happens to be a great spectacle when watched from a hilltop or so.

Albeit, people are aware of the consequences of their activities on this particular day, but are they taking any measures to avoid environmental pollution? Only a few, and when you ask a kid about Diwali, he would tell you that he loves crackers-rockets,10,000 wala, wire chakkar, flower pots etc . But, he is less aware of the dangerous threat they create for our surroundings. Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) released in the air containing oxides of metals and dust particles that cause serious health problems, and inhaling toxic heavy metals like lead, copper, zinc, potassium, cadmium etc causes a lot of serious respiratory problems.Therefore, we must see that we enjoy this festival with minimal explosions. Instead of bursting 40 crackers on an average per family, we can reduce it to 5 crackers, and this is how we can save our environment and indeed ourselves!

Innovation and Conclusion

My seminar on Information Technology in the fields of Environment and Human Health was well received by my fellow mates. But, while I was giving my speech, I trembled with fear. Obviously, it's common for most of the teenagers. I covered many topics including Databases, GIS (Geographical Information System) and remote sensing, World Wide Web etc. Firstly I'd rambled on certain philosophies, and then started off my topic. And my final conclusion was to spread awareness about our environmental issues and human health through IT.

But then, the next day itself, I encountered a website in a public forum. It's intention was to reduce the use of computer because energy gets wasted and some carbon dioxide is also released into atmosphere. I wondered for a meanwhile, what would be the reason behind CO2 emission.The site was http://greeninnovation.in and surprisingly, at present, it's domain is under sale.After googling, I came to know that generating the electricity needed to power those computers requires hundreds of power plants that produces billions of tons of CO2.

Well, I found another link, wherein, the same info in the form of  Cyber Warming  staggered me. But, what actually we must reckon is that IT has both pros and cons and can influence our environment. It's usage for creating awareness among the people around the world is really amazing. On the other hand, it's also affecting our environment.

If you are keen to save (y)our environment, then you can install a toolbar in your PC or laptop which is a co2 saver.Please visit the following site for further details :http://co2saver.snap.com .

Benefits
  • Save energy;
  • Reduce harmful CO2;
  • Lower your electric and cooling bills;
  • See how much you've saved!
